Supporting India’s Smart Meter Revolution Through Better Wireless Planning

by | Jun 29, 2026

The EDX Wireless team recently visited India to participate in the Metering India Conference in New Delhi, one of the country’s leading events focused on smart metering, utility modernization, and digital transformation.

Our visit provided an excellent opportunity to engage directly with industry leaders, utilities, technology providers, and infrastructure experts who are shaping the future of India’s rapidly evolving energy sector.

India’s Smart Metering Momentum

India’s smart metering market continues to experience significant growth, driven by government initiatives, utility modernization programs, and the increasing need for reliable, data-driven energy management. With millions of smart meters being deployed across the country, utilities are investing heavily in communication networks, system integration, and digital infrastructure to support large-scale implementations.

Throughout the conference and our meetings, one theme remained consistent: while smart meter deployment is accelerating, ensuring reliable network performance and communication coverage remains a critical challenge.

Valuable Industry Discussions

During our visit, we had the privilege of meeting with several key stakeholders across the utility and smart metering ecosystem.

Beyond the conference, our team participated in several productive meetings with organizations involved in India’s smart utility ecosystem. We had the opportunity to connect with industry leaders and technology innovators, including representatives from BSES Rajdhani, Eysasoft, Ripple Metering, Zen Meters, Chandigarh Utility, and other key stakeholders.

These discussions provided valuable perspectives on market growth, deployment strategies, communication technologies, operational challenges, and future opportunities within the smart metering sector.

While every deployment environment is unique, a common theme emerged: the need for robust planning methodologies that help utilities make informed decisions before infrastructure is deployed in the field.

Key Challenges Facing Smart Meter Deployments

While the pace of deployment is impressive, several challenges continue to impact large-scale smart metering projects:

Network Coverage Uncertainty

Utilities often need to deploy communication infrastructure across dense urban environments, suburban neighborhoods, and geographically complex areas. Predicting communication performance before deployment remains a significant challenge.

Mesh Network Optimization

As RF mesh technologies become more widely adopted, utilities must ensure reliable connectivity between millions of endpoints. Network density, interference, terrain, and building structures all influence performance.

Deployment Efficiency

Large-scale deployments require careful planning to reduce field surveys, avoid costly redesigns, and accelerate project timelines.

Data-Driven Decision Making

Utilities increasingly require accurate modeling and simulation tools to evaluate multiple deployment scenarios before making infrastructure investments.

How EDX Wireless Supports the Industry

We believe that successful smart metering deployments begin with intelligent planning.

Our solutions help utilities, system integrators, and technology providers:

  • Model and optimize RF mesh networks
  • Predict communication coverage before deployment
  • Analyze propagation and signal performance
  • Identify coverage gaps and potential network issues
  • Reduce deployment risks and improve project efficiency
  • Support data-driven infrastructure decisions

As India’s smart metering ecosystem continues to expand, the importance of accurate wireless network planning will only increase.

Looking Ahead

Our visit to India reinforced the tremendous opportunities ahead for utilities, technology providers, and infrastructure partners. The country’s commitment to digital transformation and smart grid modernization is creating one of the world’s most dynamic utility markets.

We are excited to continue engaging with utilities, metering providers, and industry partners across India as we work together to address communication planning challenges and support the next generation of smart metering deployments.

We would like to thank everyone we met during our visit and at the Metering India Conference for the insightful discussions and warm hospitality. We look forward to building new partnerships and contributing to the continued growth of India’s smart utility ecosystem.
